The Beatitudes Blueprint. Day Six: Believing is Seeing

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).

In the 90s there was a phenomenon called Magic Eye, which was a series of books that contained 2D images of random dots that appeared 3D when one diverged his or her eyes a certain way.  I could not always see what I was supposed to see no matter how I altered my focus, and often those Magic Eye pictures for me were a jumbled mess with no clear image.  I would stare and move the picture around, close to my face and then away from my face, but rarely could I see what I was supposed to see.  I guess I did not have the “magic eye.”

The magic eye image was always there.  It never changed, but in order for me to see the actual image I had to change the way I looked at it.  Seeing God is kind of like this.  He is the holy and unchanging one, “who was and is and is to come” (Revelation 4:8).  Jesus is the “same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8), but our hearts are deceitful and desperately sick (Jeremiah 17:9), so if we are to truly see God something must change.

Thankfully, because of Christ’s sacrifice for sins once for all we are declared righteous by grace through faith.  This is why the pure in heart are able to see God.  Throughout the course of a maturing Christian’s life, she will grow in her awareness of God and of His ways.  She will not only one day see God face to face, but she will spiritually see Him in the here and now as she becomes more like Him.  We are commanded “Be holy as I am holy,” (1 Peter 1:16).  As the Spirit enables us to grow in holiness we will also grow in spiritual discernment, seeing God in ways we would not have otherwise.

We can fool a lot of people, but we cannot fool God, because He sees the thoughts and intentions of our hearts (Jeremiah 17:10; Hebrews 4:12).  When we are pure in heart, we are not putting on a show for others but are genuinely pure in our intentions and motivation.  God sees this.  He blesses this.  And what is the blessing?:  Seeing more of Him.

Ask God today to examine your heart and grant you discernment of where there may be impurity in thought, motivation, or intention.  Confess and repent of whatever He reveals to you.  Be sensitive to the Spirit’s work in your life.  As you and I continually walk in fellowship with God, He will help us to see with His eyes and will reveal more of Himself to us.  Seeing God in this way now is a prelude to the glory of seeing Him face to face in eternity, and we are promised that we shall be like Him (1 John 3:2).  Let God change you as you look intently in His Word, listening to His voice, and walking by faith in His grace.  We will see more clearly as we look to Him.  This is not magic.  This is blessing.  For when we see God we see as we were made to see.  Let’s look forward to the day when this will be so.
