Changing the World at Home

we can do it

I am keeping this post short for the very reason I am writing this.

Let me explain.

It is easy as a mom to feel at times ineffective or hindered in her station in life.  There are problems to solve and lives to save “out there”, and the crises mount day after day in this ever increasingly broken world.  Not every mom feels this way, though.  Some moms feel confident and content in their work at home, but there are those who perhaps grow restless in their work.  Maybe social media is to blame, or unfinished business, or unrealized dreams.  Books are written for such “restless” moms.

There are those “platform moms” (for lack of a better description) who write books, blogs, sell fair trade jewelry, travel, speak to us homebound moms about changing the world while the homebound moms are changing diapers.  Moms (especially moms of littles), you do not have to change the world.  Your greatest impact on the globe may not be on hundreds or thousands of lives, but maybe on the lives of two or three.  A person’s moral framework is developed in the first four years of life.  So, being present in those years is crucial, not just physically present, but emotionally and spiritually present.  Maybe there is that campaign to lead or book to write, and maybe thousands of strangers will applaud my philanthropic or even evangelistic work, but if my two or three at home are left wanting then it is all a waste.  There will be a time to blaze those trails and “save the world”, but moms of littles, this is not that time.

We don’t make idols of our children, but we don’t subvert them to other idols either.  Let God be God, and let us be committed to the work he has assigned us, and for moms (dads too- yes!) it is to be world changers at home.

“Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.  This is my rule in all the churches.” 1 Corinthians 7:17

We can have other work, and for many of us we must!  You do not have to literally stay-at-home to be “present” at home.  The fact is that you can be a stay-at-home mom and be emotionally and spiritually absent.  Let’s be present!

So what can we do for others besides those in our home?

1.  We can pray.  Let us be faithful to pray against injustice, and for those who are in harm’s way or may need the gospel.

2.  We can give.  Buy the jewelry, give to missions, sponsor a child, do what you can to physically help those in need.  It may be as simple as bringing a meal to a sick member of your church, or sitting with a widow in her home having good conversation over a cup of tea.

3.  We can raise awareness.  Sign petitions, write to your congressman, and share your concerns with your pastors.  Be a voice for the voiceless.

We can change the world without traveling the world or the World-Wide-Web.  Being faithful and present in the present work is how moms can do this.  The enemy is sneaky and will use anything and everything to deter us from that work.  We are not unaware of his schemes.  So, moms, here’s to you!  Don’t give up.  Don’t give in.  Don’t doubt the important work that you do day in and day out.  Your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
